Overview
What is an Amphenol cable assembly?
An Amphenol cable assembly uses connectors or cable from Amphenol's many product lines. Amphenol FCI, which carries the former FCI and Berg ranges, makes board-level families such as Minitek for wire-to-board links inside equipment. Amphenol Conec is known for D-sub and industrial circular connectors, and Amphenol Spectra-Strip makes flat ribbon cable, including twisted-pair and shielded types. A single assembly can combine several of them.
- Board-level, D-sub and circular connectors
- Flat, twisted-pair and shielded ribbon cable
- Former FCI and Berg families
- Mixed connector types in one assembly
Features
Features of Amphenol cable assemblies
Amphenol's range runs from compact board connectors to rugged panel connectors. These features show where each part fits and what we watch for when building with it.
-
Compact board connections
Minitek housings and crimp terminals make small, polarized wire-to-board links between circuit boards, displays and sensors inside an enclosure.
-
D-sub panel interfaces
D-sub connectors from Amphenol and its Conec line come in standard, high-density and combination layouts, giving a familiar, screw-locked interface at the panel.
-
Industrial circular options
Conec circular connectors use threaded coupling and sealed housings, suiting sensor, actuator and field wiring on machines and factory floors.
-
Ribbon cable choices
Spectra-Strip flat cable comes in plain, twisted-pair and shielded versions, so the cable can be chosen for signal quality as well as fit.
Capabilities
Building with Amphenol parts
Board connectors, D-subs and ribbon cable each need their own tooling and methods, and we handle all of them in our own factories.
Fine-wire crimping
Minitek and other board-level terminals crimped onto fine-gauge wire with tooling matched to each terminal and checked against your crimp requirements.
D-sub termination
D-sub contacts crimped or soldered as the connector design requires, then fitted with backshells, jackscrews and strain relief to suit the cable.
Ribbon IDC termination
Spectra-Strip ribbon mass terminated into IDC sockets or D-sub IDC connectors, with strain relief clips fitted and pin 1 oriented as drawn.
Circular connector wiring
Circular connectors wired to your pinout, with the cable shield terminated as the housing design allows and the clamp gripping the jacket firmly.
Genuine Amphenol parts
Genuine Amphenol connectors and cable sourced through our supply network. Approved equivalents are used only when your drawing permits them.
Testing and inspection
Before shipment, each order is checked for continuity, shorts and pin 1 orientation, plus other tests in the plan agreed in your quote.

Applications
Where Amphenol assemblies are used
With board, panel, circular and ribbon options, Amphenol parts turn up in equipment from infusion pumps to production lines.
Industrial automation
D-sub and circular cables linking PLCs, sensors and drives on production lines.
Semiconductor equipment
Shielded ribbon and circular cabling inside wafer-handling, inspection and process tools.
Robotics
Minitek harnesses for controllers, grippers and sensors in robot arms and mobile robots.
Medical devices
Internal wiring for infusion pumps, dialysis machines and hospital beds.
Rail and transit
Onboard control, passenger information and signaling equipment wired with D-sub and circular connectors.
Telecom equipment
Ribbon, D-sub and board-level wiring inside network shelves, cabinets and base station units.
Quality
Quality built into every connection
Quality is designed into the process rather than inspected in at the end. Every program follows the same four steps, in an ISO-certified manufacturing environment.
Agree the specification
We review your drawing, materials and acceptance criteria with you before anything is built.
Prove the first article
A prototype or first article confirms fit, form and function before production starts.
Build to documented processes
Production follows documented work instructions at every step, from cutting to final assembly.
Test before it ships
Every order is tested against the plan agreed in your quote before it leaves the factory.
FAQ
Questions buyers ask
Can't find your answer? Send us your drawing and questions, and our engineers will come back to you.
Which Amphenol product lines can you build with?
We build with Amphenol FCI board-level families such as Minitek, Amphenol Conec D-sub and circular connectors, and Spectra-Strip ribbon cable, along with other Amphenol parts your drawing names. Older FCI and Berg part numbers are welcome too, and we will confirm which parts are current before quoting.
Can you build assemblies with Spectra-Strip twisted-pair ribbon cable?
Yes. Twisted-pair flat cable keeps short flat sections at intervals, so connectors can be mass terminated by IDC while the twisted lengths between them help reject noise. Tell us the conductor count, connector positions and pin 1 orientation, and we will plan the cut points around the flat sections.
Can one assembly combine a D-sub with Minitek or ribbon connectors?
Yes. A common layout runs from a board-level connector inside the enclosure to a D-sub or circular connector at the panel. We can build it with discrete wire or ribbon, depending on the signals and space, and our engineers will review the transition on your drawing.
How are Amphenol cable assemblies tested?
Every order is tested to the plan agreed in your quote. Typical checks include continuity, shorts between adjacent conductors, pin 1 orientation on ribbon assemblies, and visual inspection of crimps, backshells and strain relief against your drawing.
